Even though the chinchilla is in no clear sign of distress, the overall color and the way you lit it (especially the way you lit it) makes me think I’m looking at an animal that will be used for some sort of twisted experiment. It is amazing how much lighting effects an image.
I concur with Becky's observation. The lighting adds to the drama and makes the viewer nervous for what awaits this little guy. This shot, despite being very depressing, is extremely well-done. The colors are soothing even though the context we find them in contradicts that. I think the eye contact makes this picture. We immediately feel drawn to the fate of this confined creature and empathize with what seems to be his utter demise.
This rodent is bottom lit, so he/she's clearly contemplating how to implement his/her plans for world domination.
